This post was inspired by this article I found: https://www.afr.com/work-and-careers/careers/job-hunting-enters-its-tinder-era-and-it-s-making-everyone-miserable-20250807-p5ml3y
On AI Filters and Human Connection
In today’s job market, sending out an application can feel a lot like swiping left on Tinder. You get the sense that your resume just disappears into a digital void, mercilessly sorted out by an algorithm. The headline of a recent article I saw pretty much sums it up: “Are Recruiters Ignoring Your Application Because of AI Filters?”
Many of us are frustrated because we know our applications often aren’t even seen by a person. Instead, so-called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) scan them for specific keywords. When the AI filters aren’t set up correctly or the systems are poorly managed, even top-tier applications can fall through the cracks.
This “Tinder era” of job hunting makes it difficult for us to truly show who we are and what we can do. The personal story, the motivation, and the soft skills that make us unique often get lost along the way.
But there’s a way out! Because true human connections are still what matter most.
In the Netherlands, my home country, people often value pragmatism and direct contact. So, that’s exactly what I plan to do: instead of waiting for my application to survive a digital filter, I’ll be personally stopping by companies in the Amsterdam Zuidas over the next few weeks. I’m convinced that a quick, personal chat can achieve more than any standardized online application.
Sometimes, the best way forward is to take a step backâaway from the digital hunt and toward real, human connection. I’m excited to see what this journey brings!
